Family Fight to the Finish
March 06, 2013
Lakeland, Florida, March 3, 2013 - The Orange Cup Regatta held in Lakeland, Fla. each year is one of the longest standing events in American Power Boat Association (A.P.B.A.) history. This early spring event gives drivers and teams an excellent opportunity to test new equipment prior to the upcoming series races.
2012 Rookie of the Year driver Ashton Rinker of Team AMSOIL set the bar by qualifying on the pole for the fifteen lap final event. Starting in the sixth position was veteran driver Terry Rinker and in seventh position was 2012 Formula 3 Champion Rob Rinker, starting for the first time in a Formula 2 final event.
Veteran driver Terry Rinker of Team AMSOIL wasted no time at the start, charging to the lead after the first turn with Rob and Ashton Rinker in pursuit in the second and third position. Team AMSOIL continued their display of dominance throughout the 15 laps of competition with Rob Rinker pulling within ½ a second of the SST-200 division race winner Terry Rinker.
"I was coming for my dad at the end, and I think he started looking in his mirrors and coming for me a bit more," said Rob Rinker. "And he obviously wasn't going to let me win, that's for sure."
Ashton held off the competition for the first place position in the SST-120 division of the competition.
Added Terry Rinker: "It's great to be able to spend time (with his family) and be able to have a common goal in mind between all three of us."
Rinker Racing will continue testing until its next event in Wheatland, Mo., May 10-11.
